Vintage Christian!
By Jimmy Beale.

Wins have been really hard to come by this season and with the first team's game called off we resisted the chance of overloading our squad with our pals from Division One.
Roy and I still believe that the squad we have at the moment is good enough to get better results but we really need to kick on now and get those results.

We had two of Bert's boys in defence. Matt De B and Max provided us with a seemingly unbreachable backline and, as it would turn out, a threat upfield. I was convinced with our height and our player's ability to deliver that we should score from a set play. It was brought to my attention that Matt has a long throw so we decided to use this and it was from Matt's special hands that we scored our first goal. Christian defied physics and his age to lift his leg higher than we thought was possible and guide an expert volley in to the top corner of the net. We then got a corner and Max rose highest (as he did all day) to plant a header, on his second team debut, in to the back of the net. 2-0 and everyone was playing their part, little Jimmy was flying around winning any header and challenge within range, Stef was dazzling the left back with his skill and bright green boots, Christian was rolling back the years (when he wasn't grey) and Chris Lane was making up for the lack of pace in defence by sweeping up.

We extended our lead when another set piece caused panic in their defence and Max swept home to double his tally and reward a fantastic first half team performance.

The dressing room at half time was a much nicer place to be than it was at our last home game. I didn't have much to pick at but reminded everyone to build on what we had acheived in the first half and keep Burgess Hill under pressure. So we stared slowly and found ourselves under pressure and I think from that I got a bit frustrated and picked up a needless booking that really should have been a red.

We didn't look like conceding but the tide of play slowly turned in their favour so it was up to the old master to show us kids (well, we could all pass for his grandchildren) how its done. To cap off a man of the match performance, Christian again scored and again it was from a set piece. We got a free kick 25 yards out and the old boy got a head of steam and curled an absolute beauty in the top corner. Time to wrap him up in a blanket and let him have a sit down? Not a chance, he then ran around like a mad man and peppered the trees behind the goal trying to get a hat-trick. Our very own geriatric...sorry, Captain Fantastic!

Burgess Hill got a goal back but our victory was complete.

Special mention's have to go to Max and Matt for helping us out. Their attitude and performance's were a massive help in getting the victory. Ben 'Tom Cruise' Hawley and Steve 'Chris Moyles' Hands, who despite playing one game every two months, were excellent. Ben's corners and movement were always a threat, Handsy's hold up play and runs helped to take the pressure off when needed. Matt Fish is always a nuisance with his touch and runs at the defense and Franko was immpecable as always. The only downside was that we had to drop a few players which isn't easy but unfortunately necessary as we try to get a run of results together. We don't enjoy telling you guys that you are not playing but we are always looking for a positive reaction as Barnsey and Dan keep us updated with your progress.

Roll on next week. With performances like Saturday, it's hard to see us staying where we are in the league but we are there for a reason and its up to us to change it!
