This was the first game of what will no doubt be, after today’s performance, a very successful season for the Colts.
After Barnes' pre match inspirational team talk today I think we all knew what was going to be expected of this Danehill team; We knew they were going to be a bit more experienced and maybe try from the off to rough up what was a very young team for Cuckfield. But I think Cuckfield had a few different ideas because from the outset the whole team, from George at left back and Jack up front, were going in to every challenge and battle with a desire that was going to win us this game.
This desire paid off because not long in to the game Jack was the first to get his name on the score sheet with a well-taken goal. Danehill then seemed to spend the rest of the half arguing with the ref or slowing the game down with niggly little fouls, this didn’t slow the enthusiasm though, with Cuckfield getting two more goals before the break courtesy of Dan and Calum. It must be noted that Cuckfield could have had a lot more goals in the first half but it just wasn’t to be.
All across the field we were outstanding with George and Michael at left and right back doing everything asked of them from Mick before we started. Chris and 'beaney' were looking more then solid, mopping up everything at the back and not giving the strikers a sniff of goal. Then moving in to midfield Adam Creasey and Jimmy F were outstanding in the middle of the park winning every ball coming their way with a few feisty challenges and battles going on. And calum and Jordan absolutely roasting the poor full backs from Danehill on the wings. God only knows how they get up and down that bloody wing! And up top, 'Mr big Mac' was doing very well holding up the ball and bringing the midfield into the game, so much so that not even before half time the whole of the back line from Danehill seemed to have spent at least a few minutes trying to man-mark the target man before they crawled back to their position having failed miserably. Also up top was young Jack who did a great job today with some clever runs and what I saw as some good old bloody hard graft from a striker. So we went into half time with a healthy 3-0 lead that could have been so much more.
Barnes told us at half time that we shouldn’t let this three goal lead think we had it won and told us to go out and start the same way we finished the first half with all guns blazing. Mick made a few changes at the break with Jordan and George going off with some injuries and replacing them was 'woody' and Sam Hitchen. After being told not to, we went out and started very slowly with Danehill somehow getting a goal from a corner. This seemed to give us a little kick up the ass that we needed and soon made us all take note. With the pace of the game changing we all seemed to step up the game and a few tackles and passes later we seemed to have wrestled back control of the game. After an unfortunate injury 15 mins into the game Chris went off and the Polish superstar Ben Wroble (whatever his name is) replaced him with 'woody' slotting in at the back. After settling down Adam and Jimmy soon started dictating the middle of the park and bringing Ben and Calum into the game again. Within a few minutes Ben was to score two simple tap-ins by being in the right place at the right time and doing well to keep his composure. Not too many minutes later Michael was to step up and add to the tally, taking what could have been Ben's hat-trick goal.
Cuckfield then finished very much how we started with what seemed like a 1000mph at times. With 'beany' coming forward and what must have been goal of the game, maybe even season!
I must say that even though I have never played with some of the Colts, today was an absolute pleasure and I was very impressed with how the Colts performed today. It was a magnificent performance from every single one of the players.
Even though I was to get MOM, I personally thought the team deserved it and if we keep this up it will be a successful season for every one involved maybe even Ben will get a call up to the Polish ladies team. |
