A Plotted History of Cuckfield Town F.C.

Landmark Events in the History of Cuckfield Town F.C.

1872 Formed by Mr. Wyndham Burrell & Mr. G.T. Bunting. Home ground was Cuckfield Park. Played in red & black hooped shirts & cricket trousers. Opposition were usually the colleges of Sussex.

1880 First reported match. Cuckfield 0 Brighton Rangers 4.

1889 Second XI formed.

1900 Founder members of Mid Sussex League along with Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, East Grinstead & Hurstpierpoint. Playing kit was changed to white shirts & blue shorts.

1905 Club moves to Ockenden Park.

1911 Make first appearance in Montgomery Cup Final.

1914 During the First World War Cuckfield lose 16 past and present players.

1922 Almost 2000 spectators witness Cuckfield’s second Montgomery Cup Final.

1925 Club moves to Cuckfield Recreation Ground. Ex-Cuckfield player Tommy Cook is capped by England!

1928 The Club fold for one season due to "lack of interest".

1932 Diamond Jubilee is celebrated with capture of the Div II title & Mowattt Cup.

1946 First League Championship is secured.

1947 Cuckfield won Montgomery Cup at the seventh attempt.

1950 League & Montgomery Cup double winners.

1952 Cuckfield join Sussex County League Div. II. Third XI formed.

1954 Cuckfield break association with Mid Sussex League by entering Reserve side in Brighton & District League.

1959 For financial reasons Cuckfield re-enter Mid Sussex League.

1963 Record appearance maker (904) Dave Farrell made his debut.

1964 League & Montgomery Cup double winners.

1973 League & Montgomery Cup double winners.

1974 League & Montgomery Cup double winners.

1976 Reserves finish second in Division 1 but cannot be promoted because First XI are in Premier Division.

1978 Intermediate level football since 1945 ends with relegation to Division 1.

1984 First XI promoted back to the Premier Division as Champions of Division 1.

1987 First XI win an epic Montgomery Cup clash with St. Francis Hospital. Following both 1-1 and 0-0 draws, Cuckfield win the cup with a single goal from Leigh Fanner! As a result of this victory Cuckfield gain local, national and international press coverage!! Why? They wore shirts for the second replay with the words 'Jesus Is Lord' emblazoned across their chests! Oddly, 'Penthouse' gentleman's magazine saw fit to give us some column inches!

1990 Cuckfield equalled the records of Ardingly & West Hoathly with their sixth championship.

1991 Cuckfield win a record eighth Montgomery Cup. Third XI revived.

1992 Christian Macrae breaks 60 year record by scoring in 15 consecutive matches. John White reaches a record 600 First Team appearances. Brighton & Hove Albion XI are entertained at Cuckfield to celebrate 120 years of Cuckfield Football Club. A commemorative certificate from the English F.A. is presented to Cuckfield’s longest serving member, Wayne Malins.

1996 Steve Eason scores 76 times in 29 games for the Third XI (a club record).

1999 Cuckfield win a record ninth Montgomery Cup. Record goalscorer Ray Leaney reaches his 500th goal in Mid Sussex football.

2007 First XI opt for relegation to Division 2. The lowest position the club have competed at since the 1930's.

2010 After three seasons spent restructuring the club from top to bottom, the First XI completed their climb back into the Premier Division and picked up a Mowatt Cup win.
